For the Love of Youth
(FLY) Project

The FLY Project provides newcomer and underrepresented high school and post-secondary youth with financial assistance and after-school programs, including tutoring, counselling, scholarships, and social support.

FLY is funded by the Government of Canada’s Supports for Student Learning Program (SSLP).

 

The FLY Project runs from August 1, 2022, to July 31, 2023.

 

Specific Objectives of FLY: Student Engagement and Success
 
The project aims to achieve the following specific objectives:

 

  • Increase the student's engagement in their studies.

  • Help students build strong social networks through athletics, support services and peer-based activities.

  • Help students set educational and career-related goals.

  • Improve students’ knowledge and access to technologies and related training.  

  • Distribute sports equipment to 1000 students.

  • Provide textbooks, bus passes, and scientific or graphic calculators to 800 students.

  • Distribute laptops to 1000 students to enhance access to technology.

  • Award 200 merit-based FLY scholarships.

 

Target Student Population: Inclusivity and Diversity
 
The following student populations are the target of this initiative:

 

  • Junior High School Students

  • Senior High School Students

  • College Students

  • Vocational/Trade Students

  • University Students

 
The program is designed to serve students who identify as:

  • Visible minority and racialized students

  • Newcomer students

  • Students with disabilities

  • Indigenous students

  • Students from low-income households

  • Students identifying as 2SLGBTQ+

  • Students who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

  • Students from Official Language Minority Communities (French-speaking)

 

Our objective is to promote inclusivity and diversity among our student population, ensuring equal access to resources, support services, and academic and personal growth opportunities. In addition, we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment that fosters a sense of belonging for all students.

 

Programs and Services

A. Educational and After-School Support Funding Assistance
​

We offer financial assistance and educational support to help eligible students succeed in school and beyond.

 

After-School Support Funding Assistance
​

If you're a student who loves sports, we can help! We give out sports equipment like basketballs, water bottles, duffel bags, and dry-fit shirts. We also provide meal vouchers to ensure you have the energy to perform your best.

​

Distribution of Educational Needs
​

We want every student to have access to the tools they need to succeed. FLY offers textbook assistance, bus passes, scientific or graphic calculators, and laptops for students. We also have FLY Academic Scholarships in categories including Most Punctual, Best Attendance, Academic Improvement, Student-Athlete Academic Achiever, and Best FLY Student Mentor.

Financial Assistance for Students with Disabilities
​

We understand that students with disabilities may need special equipment to learn effectively. FLY offers financial assistance to eligible students with disabilities.

 

B. After-School Supports and Activities
​

Learning shouldn't stop when the school bell rings. FLY offers a variety of after-school supports and activities to help youth achieve their goals.

 

Basketball Camps
​

If you love basketball, you will want to attend our Basketball Camps! FLY has partnered with The Calgary Dinos, the University of Calgary’s basketball team, to provide a fun and supportive environment where youth can improve their skills. Plus, there are participation awards!

 
Tutoring Services
​

FLY’s got you covered if you need extra help with your academics. Our tutoring services offer one-on-one or group academic tutoring, both online and in-person, in subjects like math, English, science, social studies, and university courses. We also provide exclusive/private student online forums, peer support, mentoring, career coaching, and post-secondary school selection and application assistance. FLY even helps with student loan and academic scholarship applications.

After-School Learning Sessions with invited Expert/Guest Speakers
​

We value lifelong learning, and so we provide after-school learning sessions with guest speakers covering topics such as "Empowering Student-Athlete Holistic Wellness," "Finding Life Balance Between School and Work," and "Students' Applications for Student Loans."

 

We also provide free meals while you participate.

 
Hybrid Digital Literacy Workshop
​

In today's digital age, it's essential to have strong digital literacy skills. Therefore, we offer a hybrid digital literacy workshop covering necessary online tools like Microsoft Suite and Adobe Acrobat.

 

We also provide free meals.

 
FLY: Participation in Immigration/Career Fairs
​

We want to ensure everyone can access our programs and services, so we participate as an exhibiter at Immigration/Career Fairs in Toronto, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Vancouver.

 
FLY Recognition Day
​

We believe in celebrating our students' achievements, which is why we hold FLY Recognition Day. This event showcases our students' cultural talents and awards scholarships, certificates of participation, volunteer awards, and free lunches. It's also an excellent opportunity to network with other students and professionals.
